Wheel Bearings

Wheel bearings are what enable your wheels to spin freely. Since they bear the entire weight of the vehicle, they have to be durable. Most wheel bearings usually last 241,401.6 KM or more, although many of them will last the entire lifespan of the vehicle without failing. However, some don’t go the distance, and the reason why is usually corrosion or abrasive wear. Wheel bearings live in a sealed environment as they are part of a sealed hub unit assembly. Sealed hub assemblies are used on both Front-Wheel Drive and Rear-Wheel Drive cars and trucks. Minimal maintenance is required however, on older vehicles with serviceable wheel bearings, it is recommended that they be removed, cleaned, inspected and re-greased every couple of years. Some cars have a built in wheel speed sensor [magnet] that is connected to the anti-lock brake system. Replacing the bearing without the ABS sensor turns on the ABS warning light on the dashboard and further disables the braking system until the sensor bearing is replaced. PLEASE NOTE: THE SENSOR CAN'T BE SEPARATELY REPLACED FOR IT WON'T WORK. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS REPLACING THE BEARING OR HUB UNIT ASSEMBLY WITH THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR ATTACHED TO IT. Replacing wheel bearings in sets (both front and rear) is recommended to reduce the risk of bearing failures further down the road. Driving at high speeds [hydroplaning] through stagnant water, pushes water into the hub past the seals which in turn causes corrosion hence damaging your bearings. A damaged wheel bearing should always be replaced without delay because bearing failure leads to other complications in the suspension unit hence raising your repair cost. When servicing the bearings of an older vehicle, make sure you use high-temperature grease which is lithium-based. It is also recommended to replace the oil seals because more often than not reused oil seals leak which leads to lubrication loss & bearing contamination.
